Year 12 SRC students Archie McDonald and Laura Moorfoot were delegates for Russia at the 2019 Rotary Model United Nations Assembly in Canberra. From August 16-18, students from across Australia gathered in the House of Representatives chamber in Old Parliament House to vote on resolutions including “Measures to Prevent the Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”, “Negotiating International Migration”, “International Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Outer Space”, and “Protection of Global Climate for Present and Future Generations of Humankind”. The event allows outstanding students with an interest in international relations to test their formal diplomatic skills, and involves extensive research, negotiation, and debate. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise, the event is in its 22nd year, and is a key part of Rotary’s goal of strengthening the role of global politics in promoting world peace.
During their time in Canberra, Laura and Archie had the opportunity to meet and discuss foreign policy priorities with representatives from the Russian Embassy. Laura and Archie spoke decisively to promote Russia’s role in promoting peace in the global world. They represented Russia, Melbourne, and Swinburne Senior Secondary College with conviction, insight, and flair.
